Surgery

Your pet is in good hands. The health care team at MVAH is very experienced and capable. We know that you may have questions or concerns about your pet's procedure and we want you to have ample opportunity to talk with the staff and doctors. Feel free to call with any questions.

Preparation for anesthesia:

NIGHT BEFORE PROCEDURE:

  • Do not feed your pet after 8pm tonight. Access to water is fine.

MORNING OF PROCEDURE:

  • No food! If your pet is diabetic do not feed them in the morning and DO NOT give them their insulin. Pets on other oral medications should receive their morning dose with just a tiny bit of food if necessary.
  • Make sure dogs have a chance to urinate and defecate before they arrive at the hospital
  • Arrive at MVAH at the appointed time and if possible, have all related admission forms completed. If they have not been completed in advance complete them in the office.
  • Leave a phone number where you can be reached during the day.
  • Schedule a discharge time.
  • Note: Admission of your pet in the morning can take 5-20 minutes. You can greatly shorten that time by initialing the estimate and Authorization for Professional Services if available.
Discharge:

Most patients having anesthesia will be ready to go home by midafternoon. Occasionally, some postoperative patients cannot be sent home the same night as their procedure because they need continued professional postoperative care. Sometimes we can anticipate who these patients are but not always. Patients having surgery with Dr. Clark almost always need to be transferred to an overnight facility. These pets cannot be managed at MVAH because the hospital is not staffed overnight. We advise you transfer these patients to either the Essex County Emergency Veterinary Hospital in North Andover or the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of the Seacoast Region in Portsmouth, NH. These are the only two hospitals in the area that have veterinarians and technicians on site overnight and on the weekends. We recognize that this arrangement is often not convenient for you but we feel strongly that it is best for your pet.
