Wellness Exams for Pets in Amesbury, MA

When you bring your cat or dog in for routine wellness exams at our animal hospital in Amesbury, you receive an expert check on your pet’s health but also prevent illness before it starts. Preventive veterinary medicine can help extend your pet’s life and also uncover concerns before they become larger illnesses. From administering immune-boosting vaccines to establishing a baseline to measure health, exams give us a chance to do so much more than just “check-up.”

How Often We Should See Your Pet

The frequency you bring your pet in to see us depends on their age and overall health status. To ensure a growing puppy or kitten stays healthy, they should see us several times a year for vaccine boosters and to test for parasites. After one year of age, your pet may not need to see us as frequently, but they should visit at least annually to maintain their health. Once your pet hits their senior years, they should come in twice a year for wellness exams since older pets are at risk of developing medical conditions rapidly. The time each pet is considered a senior depends on their size and species. If you’re unsure about your pet’s health condition and how often they should come in for pet exams, just ask us! We’re happy to help.

Puppy and Kitten Wellness Exams

The same as in humans, the first year of life is of prime importance for puppies and kittens. During every exam, a chance to discuss your new pet’s behavior, nutrition, and adjustment to your home are given. We like to see puppies and kittens during their first few months of life for a full nose-to-tail exam to check for intestinal parasites, administer vaccines and more. After an initial exam, we prescribe a vaccine schedule to further strengthen their developing immune system. Most typically, this schedule will run every 3-4 weeks until around 16 weeks of age depending on when we first started your pet’s vaccinations. “These folks are the best. Their fondness for people and animals shines through all they do. So happy to call them our vet’s office.”

Parasite Prevention for Pets in Amesbury

At Merrimac Valley Animal Hospital, we take our parasite prevention program very seriously. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more than just irritating pests, they can also be the carriers of deadly diseases. We recommend that all pet owners keep your pet protected from pests year-round to ensure that they are safe from the deadly diseases that can result from parasites. Deer ticks are everywhere and can carry Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, dog ticks carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and mosquitoes transmit heartworm disease which is expensive to treat in dogs and ultimately untreatable in cats. Fleas are common too. They can carry the organism responsible for cat scratch disease in people and tapeworms in dogs and cats.

If you are in need of parasite prevention, please ask our team right away. We can provide ongoing preventative health care for your pet, and we recommend that prevention be used year-round.
